The Lester side of my family is from southwest Virginia in Washington County near the Smyth County line. My third great grandfather Levi Lester, Sr. is as far back as I have been able to go. Where he came from before purchasing land there is not known but a family story is that he was born in New Jersey. His first wife and the mother of his children is also unknown. I don’t even think we have the names of all of his children. The three we know pre-deceased him. I can trace my line from his son Levi Lester, Jr. and wife Hannah Sherwood.
Levi Jr. and Hannah had five known children who were left orphaned at a young age. His son David Lester and wife Esther Sherwood were the parents of my great grandfather Uriah Mathias Lester. Uriah was a skilled carpenter and several of his nine sons followed him in this profession. My grandfather Lacy Marshall Lester was one of them.
Lacy served in the Army Air Force in WWII. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. In the effort to document my own family lines in the Washington County Virginia area I have documented many others directly and indirectly related to mine.
